Gourmet meals don’t need pricey ingredients or hours in the kitchen – it’s all about smart, simple tweaks. Whether it’s using pantry staples creatively or mastering the art of presentation, these hacks will have you serving up showstopping meals in no time.
Mussels are often one of the most affordable seafood options and can be transformed into a show-stopping dish with minimal effort.
How to elevate: Cook mussels in a fragrant broth of white wine, garlic, shallots and fresh herbs. Serve them in their shells with a drizzle of good olive oil and a sprinkle of chopped parsley for a bistro-style presentation. Add in some chorizo if you can spring for it, as below. The key is to use a wide, shallow bowl to make the dish look abundant and inviting.

For sardines, try a bruschetta with sardines, lemon, chilli flakes and fresh parsley on toasted sourdough to give it a Mediterranean flair.
